How you orient a model on the print bed has a bigger effect on part strength than almost any other setting - including infill percentage. A part printed in the wrong orientation can be five or ten times weaker than the same part printed correctly, even with the same settings. This guide explains why orientation matters and how to think about it for any print.
FDM (filament) printing is an anisotropic process - meaning it's not equally strong in all directions. Each layer is fused to the one below it, but that bond is always weaker than the filament strand itself. Think of it like a stack of bricks: the bricks themselves are very strong, but the mortar between them is the weak point.
The weak direction is always Z - the vertical axis. A force that tries to pull layers apart (a "Z-direction" force) will always find the layer bonds first. The strong direction is X/Y - along the plane of the layers - because there you're loading the filament strands directly.
This has one practical implication: orient your model so that the forces it will experience in use run along the layers, not across them.
Put the load along the layer lines, not across them.
A simple example: a hook.
Before slicing, ask yourself: where will this part be loaded, and in what direction?
A wall bracket needs to resist bending. The force on it is trying to bend it downward. Print it with the flat back face on the bed - layers run horizontally across the bracket. Loading from the front compresses the top surface and tensions the bottom, but both are loaded along the layer direction, not across it.
Printing the bracket standing upright looks like it would be stronger (more perimeters on the mounting face) but the layer lines run straight through the bending direction and it'll snap much more easily.
Snap fit tabs flex and spring back. The flex stress runs along the tab. Print snap fits so the tab bends in the X/Y plane, not the Z direction. If the tab is horizontal in the model, print the part standing upright so the tab bends laterally, not up/down through the layer lines.
Cylindrical parts like pegs or axles get loaded laterally. Print them vertically (standing upright) so the layers wrap around the cylinder. Loading them sideways then runs along the layer lines - much stronger than printing them lying flat where the layers are stacked in the direction of load.
Flat parts printed flat on the bed are strong in X/Y (bending across the panel) but weak against peeling (Z-direction loading). If you need a panel to resist peeling forces - like a clip that holds something in - more perimeters help more than infill.
Sometimes the strongest orientation isn't practical. A long thin part standing upright might be too tall to fit in the printer, or it might require a lot of supports. In those cases you're balancing:
If you need the part to be genuinely strong, prioritise orientation over everything else. If it's decorative or low-stress, print it however gives the best surface finish.
Once your orientation is right, these settings give you additional strength:
More perimeters (walls) dramatically increase strength - more than infill does. 3-4 perimeters is a good baseline for any functional part. The outer shells carry most of the load; infill mainly prevents the walls from buckling inward.

For maximum strength, gyroid and cubic are the best all-rounders - they're isotropic (equally strong in all directions within the layer plane). Grid and lines are faster but have preferred weak directions.

Thinner layers create more layer bonds per unit height and are slightly stronger in the Z direction, but the effect is smaller than most people expect. The main benefit of thin layers is surface quality, not strength.

If you're printing something that matters - a bracket, a tool, a printed part that goes in a machine - do a quick destructive test on a sample first. Print one, load it by hand, and see where and how it fails. That tells you exactly what to adjust.

One sentence rule: orient the part so the main load runs along the layers, and use 3-4 perimeter walls for anything structural.
