The slicer turns your 3D model into the instructions your printer follows. Choosing the wrong one is not catastrophic - you can switch - but starting with the right one for your printer and experience level saves a lot of unnecessary friction.
All three are free. Here is how they actually differ and when to use each.
Developed by Ultimaker, now open source. The most widely installed slicer in the world.
Best for: Creality Ender 3, CR-10, and most budget FDM printers. Works with a very wide range of brands.

Who should use it: Ender 3 and Creality users, anyone whose printer only has Cura profiles, anyone following YouTube tutorials (most budget printer tutorials use Cura).
Developed by Prusa Research, based on the open-source Slic3r codebase. Works with any printer, not just Prusas.
Best for: Prusa printers (MK4, Mini, XL), but excellent for any FDM printer where reliability matters.

Who should use it: Prusa owners (obviously), but also anyone who finds Cura overwhelming and wants a cleaner starting point. PrusaSlicer is good for any FDM printer and is often where people end up after outgrowing Cura's defaults.
Developed by Bambu Lab for their own printers, available as open source.
Best for: Bambu Lab printers (A1, A1 Mini, P1S, X1C). Usable with other printers via generic profiles, but noticeably less capable outside the Bambu ecosystem.

Who should use it: Bambu Lab printer owners. If you have a Bambu printer, Bambu Studio is the right choice - it is purpose-built for the hardware and everything integrates properly. If you do not own a Bambu, use Cura or PrusaSlicer instead.

You have a Bambu Lab printer: Bambu Studio. No other slicer integrates properly with the AMS, camera monitoring, or direct print sending.
You have a Prusa printer: PrusaSlicer. The profiles are accurate, the interface is clean, and it is what Prusa ships documentation for.
You have a Creality or other budget printer: Cura. The profile library is the largest, and most tutorials for Ender 3 and similar machines use it.
You are unsure: Download PrusaSlicer. The interface is easier to learn, the concepts transfer directly to Cura if you switch later, and it is genuinely excellent for most printers.
Start with the built-in printer profile. All three slicers have presets for popular printers. Use yours before touching anything. The presets are not always perfect, but they are a much better starting point than defaults designed for no printer in particular.
Change one setting at a time. When learning, changing multiple settings at once makes it impossible to know what improved things. Adjust one, test, then adjust the next.
Save your own profiles. Once you have a combination of settings that works well for your printer and your most-used filament, save it as a named profile. Recreating it from scratch every time is wasted effort.
Most experienced users end up with at least two slicers installed and use different ones for different situations. You are not locked in to your first choice.
