How to Fix 3D Printer Grinding Noises

A grinding noise from a 3D printer is almost always telling you something specific. The key is working out where the noise is coming from - because the cause and fix are completely different depending on the source. A grinding extruder is a different problem to a grinding Z axis, and treating them the same way will get you nowhere.

This guide breaks it down by location.


Step 1: Locate the Noise

Before anything else, try to pinpoint where the grinding is coming from while the printer is running:

Extruder Grinding (Most Common)

This is the most frequent source of grinding in 3D printing. The extruder gear is chewing or stripping the filament rather than gripping and feeding it cleanly. You may also see filament dust or shavings building up near the extruder.

Causes and fixes:

Print temperature too low: The filament is not soft enough to push through easily, so the gear grinds against it instead. Try increasing nozzle temperature by 5-10C and see if the grinding stops.

Print speed too high: The extruder motor cannot push filament fast enough to keep up with the print head. Reduce speed by 20-30%.

Partial nozzle clog: A restriction in the nozzle creates back-pressure, and the extruder gear slips against the filament trying to force it through. This is the most common underlying cause of persistent extruder grinding. See the complete nozzle guide for how to clear a clog with a cold pull.

Extruder tension too high or too low: Most extruders have a tension adjustment (a spring-loaded arm or screw). Too tight and the gear bites into the filament; too loose and it slips. Adjust until the gear grips firmly without deforming the filament visibly.

Worn extruder gear: Over time the teeth on the extruder gear wear down and lose their grip. If the gear looks rounded or clogged with filament dust that will not clean out, it needs replacing. Replacement gears are cheap and usually easy to swap.

Hotend Grinding

If the noise is coming from the hotend itself rather than the extruder motor, the cause is almost always a partial or full clog. The extruder is trying to push filament through a restriction, creating a rhythmic clicking or grinding as it skips.

You will usually hear this as a clicking or knocking sound from the hotend area in a regular rhythm during printing.

Fix: Do a cold pull to clear the clog. Heat to printing temperature, push filament through manually, then cool to around 90C and pull the filament out sharply. Repeat until the tip comes out clean with no dark residue. Full instructions in the complete nozzle guide.

Z Axis Grinding

A grinding or scraping noise during vertical movement (at the start of each layer or during Z hops) usually means the lead screw needs attention.

Dry lead screw: The most common cause. Lead screws need periodic lubrication - a dry screw grinds against the brass nut as it turns. Apply a PTFE-based lubricant or light machine grease to the screw, wipe off the excess, and run the Z axis up and down a few times to distribute it. Do not use WD-40.

Misaligned lead screw: If the lead screw is not perfectly vertical, it binds as it turns. Check that the screw sits straight in its coupler at the bottom. If the coupler is rigid and the screw is slightly off-axis, a flexible coupler will absorb the misalignment and usually eliminates the noise.

Worn or damaged lead screw nut: The brass nut that the lead screw threads through can wear over time, especially if it has been running dry. If lubrication does not fix the problem, inspect the nut for wear.

X and Y Axis Grinding (Rails, Rods, and Wheels)

Grinding during horizontal movement - while the print head or bed moves back and forth - usually comes from one of these:

Dry smooth rods or linear rails: Smooth rods need a light oil, linear rails need a thin film of grease. If they have run dry they will grind and also cause inconsistent movement. Apply appropriate lubricant and move the carriage back and forth to spread it.

Worn V-slot wheels: On printers that use V-slot extrusion rails (Ender 3 series and similar), the plastic wheels can develop flat spots over time. A flat spot on a wheel makes a rhythmic clunk with each rotation. Spin each wheel by hand with the printer off - you should feel smooth rotation with no rough spots. Replace any wheels that feel uneven.

Debris on the rail: Filament shavings, dust, or dried lubricant can accumulate on rails and cause grinding. Wipe the rails clean with a dry cloth before re-lubricating.

Loose or over-tightened eccentric nuts: If the carriage wheels are clamped too tightly against the rail, they will grind and resist movement. Adjust the eccentric nuts until the carriage moves smoothly with just enough resistance to feel stable.
